Property Taxes - A form of extortion
People living Austin must have gotten their shock of their lives when they received their new appraisal. For most, the appraisal prices have gone through the roof.
I live in an old neighborhood. Most houses there are over 30 years old and many of them bought their homes decades ago. The land values have been appraised at least two or three times. It appears to me the government is trying to drive all these people out of their houses with tax appraisal.
I bought a house some 19 years ago and it is appraised at three times that much. I wish my salary went up three times! I know of some who bought house likewise thinking they could afford them .. now with the new appraisal they can't afford to keep them. With the new appraisal, their taxes have gone up but their salaries have not kept up to pay taxes.
Some times I wonder taxes are a form of extortion or protection money we must pay to the government - especially the taxes that go by the name of property taxes. The Federal Income taxes comparatively seems very fair. The more you make the more you pay. That is fair. But when the house is appraised more, why do I pay more taxes when I have not I have not realized the gain yet. I understand the taxes when I make a gain. But I do not understand why we pay more taxes when we have not earned anything yet.
I am sure there are many who pay more in property taxes than they pay in income taxes. I wish the taxes on property in Texas followed the way of California. I wish Texas impose a state income tax (may be even at par at Federal Taxes) and reduce the property taxes which keeps increasing with no rhyme or reason
