Austin Buddhist Center
Austin Buddhist Center is the newest Buddhist Temple in town. It was opened to public on October 14, 2007. Although this was started by Sri Lankan Buddhists and supported by them, it strives to be a Buddhist Temple and not another ethnic temple.
Bhante Gunararna, author of two well known books Mindfulness in Plain English and Eight Steps to Mindfulness in his speech urged his compatriots not to make it an ethnic temple, but to make it a Buddhist Temple where everyone feels welcome.
You can see this sign in front of the temple. Aloko Udapadi means Light Unveiled. I think this phrase comes from Dhammachakkappavattana sutta, which is Buddha's first discourse in his 45 year long teachings on Dhamma.
This is the Buddha Rupa you see in the shrine room. The Buddha is in the Dhyanee Mudra. In the back and on the wall, you see the bodhi tree. The Buddha icon came from Sri Lanka.
The temple has two resident monks and the center offers a free meditation class every Saturday between 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM. There is a lecture session followed by tea, meditation and chanting. Public are welcome to take advantage of this.
The temple came into being by the tireless efforts of many people including Mr. Vimala Ratanyake, Manoj and many like minded people. The generosity of Chandrasoma family was largely responsible for the temple to come into being.
