Grand Father's Clock
This is really my grandfather's clock. He had it for many many years (I think). Much before that it belonged to his friend and he presented it to my grandfather. No one really know how old the clock is!
My grandfather presented it to his daughter (my mother) in sixties (1960's) and since then it has been in our family's collection. It made a single sound (DUNN) at half the hour and made as many sounds (ticks) as the hour was!. Those days I used to count it so I know what hour it was. At that time, I found it quite loud (in the still of the night). The only sound louder than that was the whistle of the ghorkha around 2:00AM in the morning who only got Rs.2 for his service (I think) from my Dad!
I never got sleep if it was a single (half-hour) sound .. not knowing the time. I still remember those days at the house.
It was hung way up on the wall .. some 10-12 ft up from the floor. I still remember my father standing on a stool and winding it everyday! I (myself) had done it many times .. just to justify myself that I am as tall as my Nayana (father)!
Everytime I went to India since my father's passing away (1986), I had seen the clock. It showed the (almost) the same time since then. And it still shows the same time.
Alas! No one wants to wind it and no one wants to hear that pleasing loud sound!
